Email Filtering for Domain Owners

  FAQ
We're sure you have questions, and we hope we have answers. If you don't see the answer to a question you have please drop us a note so we can help you out and add it to this page.

Q: What is an "active" email address?
A: An "active" email address is any address for which ten non-spam, non-virus messages have been delivered to and accepted by your mail server in the previous 30 days.

Q: I'm getting charged too much - what can I do?
A: All billing is based on the number of "active" email addresses on your domain(s). First let us say that we know that cases will arise where our system will detect more "active" email addresses than you really have. This is normal and part of why we only charge only $1 per address per month. That being said there are several things you can do to lower your monthly bill!
  • Don't accept mail for invalid recipients.
  •   Ensure your mail server only accepts email for addresses that are valid for your domain. We can't possibly provide technical assistance to everyone who wants to do this due to the large variety of mail server software being used. However, we will try our best to help you if you contact us. Here are a few links that may be useful:

  • Periodically train missed spam as spam
  •   If spam mail is coming in to invalid users for your domain try training a few of the messages as spam via the administrative interface.

Q: Can I configure Dotclean to only filter mail for specific email addresses?
A: No, not at this time except by specific request. Dotclean automatically filters mail for all email addresses on a domain. This was an intentional design decision to prevent administrators from having to keep a list of valid recipients up-to-date on Dotclean. We know they're already busy enough! However, we have designed Dotclean to have the capability to do many advanced things like only filter for users X, Y, and Z. Or filter for all users except users Q and W. These, and many many other features will be possible in the near future - please stay posted and contact us if one of these are keeping your domain from using Dotclean so we can evaluate it and possibly escalate it's priority.

Q: I'm still getting spam, but it's not coming through Dotclean! What do I do?
A: Here are a few things you can try:
  • Configure your mail server to only accept mail coming from *.dotclean.com
  •   All filtered mail for your domain will come from proxyXX.dotclean.com. If you can configure your mail server to reject mail not coming from those hosts you can ensure your server isn't accepting unfiltered mail.
  • Configure your email client to automatically delete mail not from Dotclean
  •   For example you could setup a rule that deletes mail that doesn't contain proxyXX.dotclean.com in the message headers.
  • Configure your firewall to reject mail not originating from one of Dotclean's subnets.
  •   This is the least desirable option, since if we decide to add a new subnet, or re-ip an existing one you'll have an outage while you try to determine what happened. If you do this please communicate that with us so we can ensure that you know about any IP address changes before they happen.

Q: How do I know Dotclean will be reliable?
A: Dotclean is fully redundant. We have redundant web servers, redundant smtp servers, and an off-site failover service. We don't make any promises, but to date we have had zero service outages!

Q: Will Dotclean handle the high volume of email our domain gets?
A: Yes. However, if you intend on routing mail for more than 1,000 email addresses we ask that you contact us ahead of time so we can assess your specific requirements and assure a smooth transition to Dotclean.
